One Day Cruise to Dandara from Luxor

The impressive Ptolemaic temple in Dandara was dedicated to the goddess Hathor, and is one of the best-preserved sanctuaries all over Egypt. It was built during the first century B.C. upon the remains of older temples, and a lot of the work was ordered by the famous Queen Cleopatra VII; one relief even shows her together with her son Caesarion who is supposed to be the offspring of the Roman Emperor Caesar.

You can enter the temple and travel back into the past – as the ceiling is still intact, you will experience the play of light and shadow creating a mystique atmosphere. Have a walk and discover the walls covered with scenes of the ancient Egyptian history. And then climb up onto the roof, using the same stairs as the ancient priests 2,000 years ago, whose processions you can see as decoration on the stairwell walls. On the roof you can visit a kiosk and two sanctuaries, and besides you will have a fantastic view over the Dandara Temple area. The Hathor Temple is without any doubts the highlight of this site, but there is even more to see: a small temple to worship Isis, a beautiful sacred lake surrounded by trees, a Coptic church, a Roman and a Ptolemaic birth-house and remains of diverse Roman brick buildings and the ancient town.
